Son of the Velvet Rat – “Rosary”

Americana Highways is hosting the Son of the Velvet Rat’s song “Rosary” from their forthcoming album Ghost Ranch, which is slated for release March 22 on Fluff and Gravy Records.  Ghost Ranch was produced by Gar Robertson and Georg Altziebler, and mixed by Fabio Schurischuster.  “Rosary” was written by Georg Altziebler and is due to be available on January 18.

“Rosary” is Jay Bellerose on drums; Jennifer Condos on electric bass; Jolie Holland on violin and vocals; Marc Ribot on electric guitar; Heike Binder on vocals and theremin; Georg Altziebler on vocals, acoustic guitar, and optigan.

The video was directed by Gordon Clark.  Like a film noir vignette, the suspense and darkness of this song begins its haunting from the opening note.   Anyone who’s been abused and bullied has felt the pull of the twisted idea of revenge. Here it’s softened, ultimately, by a rosary.  But the complexity is provocative.

“Rosary” is about the dichotomy and hypocrisy of today’s perception of reality. While it’s inspired by an outsider’s view of US-society, it certainly describes similar tendencies in Europe as well. The song is written from a schoolboy’s perspective. It’s Sunday morning and the sun is shining. Mom has gone to church and her boy is playing with daddy’s gun. He’s thinking about his birthday, the bullies in school and what the gun could do for him. – Georg Altziebler
