Alex Jordan – “Saving Grace”
Americana Highways is hosting this premiere of Alex Jordan’s song “Saving Grace” from his new album Queen Kerosene, produced by Steve Berlin, due to be released on March 8.
“Saving Grace” is Alex Jordan on vocals and guitar; Jacob Hildebrand on electric guitar; Scott Davis on bass; Fred Mandujano on drums and percussion; Gil Elorreaga on trumpet; Dan Bechdolt on tenor and baritone saxophones; and Mark “Speedy” Gonzales on trombone.
This video was directed and edited by Joshua Britt and Neilson Hubbard (Neighborhoods Apart Productions), and features Alex Jordan, Marilynn Wright, and Brooks Wright.
Transistor radio, corded payphones and rotary dialed phones, and the notion of a wayward child repenting before parents’ judgements, or perhaps an aging couple’s dynamics of forgiveness (or not) characterize the video performance. The song is spacious, easygoing and disarming with the upswell of the horns and Alex on piano, as he simply asks, ultimately, for the warm embrace of unconditional love. It should always just be that simple.
The weird thing about recording “Saving Grace” and how the video turned out is I’m usually very buttoned-up and serious but had only written out the guitar part, and it was not until I sat down at the piano in the studio at Steve Berlin’s direction to “just try it” did my playing the piano on the album even become a thing. With the band at my back where I could just feel them as if we were live, the drummer Fred Mandujano kicked off his fill with a laugh and instead of a serious place, suddenly we were at a party. Then when director Neilson Hubbard proposed a lighthearted and campy couple to act out the gravity of the song in the video, I knew that dichotomy would absolutely nail it. – Alex Jordan
